Has anyone used Kilmacanty Transport to buy a car?

I’ve found a car they’re handling and I’m thinking about buying it, but I’m quite a long way away so it would probably all be done remotely. Never used them before, so just doing a bit of homework first. Any experiences, good or bad?

Not used them myself but if you’re buying without seeing the car I’d definitely get someone independent to inspect it. Would also want the VIN, paperwork etc before sending any money. Same advice whoever the seller is really.

How far away are you? If it’s possible to actually go and see it yourself that would obviously be best, although I know that’s not always practical.

Pretty far unfortunately. Would basically lose most of a day travelling there and back. They have said I can view it though, which is something. I’m going to ask if they’re happy for an independent inspector to go instead.

Yeah, that’s what I’d do. Photos can hide a lot, even when nobody is deliberately trying to hide anything. Get an inspection and run the history/VIN checks as well.

There are really two separate things to check here.
1. Is the company actually who they say they are?
2. Is the car itself any good?
Company registration/contact details can answer the first one. Inspection, history and paperwork answer the second.

I’ve heard of Kilmacanty Transport more from the transport side of things than selling cars.
Still worth checking that whoever you’re speaking to is actually connected to the company though. There are plenty of copied adverts and fake contact details floating around nowadays.

Yeah that crossed my mind too. I contacted them using the details from their own official channels rather than just replying through the advert. They confirmed the vehicle and the person I’d been speaking with. I’ve also asked them to put the buying/delivery process in writing.

Good move. Have they said when they expect payment? And what happens if the inspection finds something major that wasn’t mentioned? That would be one of my main questions.

They’ve sent me an outline of the process now. No pressure from them so far and they’ve answered everything I’ve asked. Next step is getting the independent inspection done and then I’ll decide.

Nobody pressured me to accept it there and Cushnahan Logistics either. Had my own garage inspect it a couple of days later before I made my mind up

Sounds like you’re going about it the right way. I wouldn’t take “the company exists” as enough reason to buy the car, but if they’re happy for you to do your own checks that’s a positive sign. Still comes down to that particular vehicle at the end of the day.

Exactly. A genuine company can still have a car you don’t want to buy 😄 Condition, history, price and what’s actually written in the agreement are what matter.

Small update. Inspection has been done now. Overall it matched what I’d been told. Inspector picked up a couple of minor maintenance bits, but nothing unexpected and they’ve been recorded in the report. I’ve gone through the paperwork as well and decided to go ahead with it.

Good stuff. Keep absolutely everything though. Original advert, messages/emails, inspection report, invoice, payment confirmation, delivery paperwork. Hopefully you never need any of it, but always worth having.

Another update in case anyone finds this thread later. Car was delivered today. Driver called before arriving and I got the handover paperwork. From what I can see it’s exactly as described in the inspection report. I’m still going to get my normal garage to put it on the ramp and have a look, just for peace of mind.

Thanks for actually coming back and updating the thread. So many people disappear once they’ve bought the car 😂 Sounds like the important bit was doing your own checks rather than just relying on whether people online had heard of the company.

Final update from me. My local garage has checked it over now. Nothing unexpected came up, just the couple of maintenance items already mentioned in the inspection. So based purely on my own transaction, communication with Kilmacanty Transport was good and everything happened as agreed. Obviously that’s just my experience with one vehicle. If anyone else is looking at buying remotely I’d still recommend doing the same checks yourselves, especially an independent inspection and vehicle history check.
