CyberNinja
My kid and I will be embarking on a road journey to AMG HQ in Affalterbach for their Christmas celebration. We will be departing tomorrow morning. I have two primary choices for routes. 1. Travelling via France has the advantage of having better quality roads, but the downside is the cost of tolls, which may range from £100 to £150 each trip. 2. Travelling through Luxembourg has the advantage of not having to pay tolls, but the downside is that the roads are not as well-maintained. I would really appreciate any guidance, since it has been over 15 years since I last drove in a foreign country. Thank you.
BEERMAN
I intend to go to France. It is quite delightful to experience well-maintained roads for a change. In addition, I consistently find the French routes to be quite efficient for covering long distances. If you have sufficient time available, Baden-Baden is highly recommended for its pleasant atmosphere. Additionally, the Schlumpf Museum, located farther south in Mulhouse, is a worthwhile destination that requires some effort to get. The Zeppelin Museum, located in Friedrichshafen, is a commendable attraction, but a considerable distance away.
ByteStorm
In my opinion, I would recommend travelling to Belgium and Luxembourg, with an overnight stay in either Clervaux or Vianden. From there, you can cross the border into Germany at Bitburg. I suggest refuelling your vehicle right before crossing the border to take advantage of the lower gasoline prices. The road network in Luxembourg is well-maintained and offers stunning views. keithmerc220
I concur. We recently travelled from Sheffield to St Tropez. Upon my arrival back in the UK, the landing experience gave me the sensation of jogging on unpaved terrain with all four tyres deflated. AMG33D
The Schlumpf Collection is definitely worthy of a visit.
BEERMAN
Nothing can adequately prepare one for it! Despite having read several testimonials, I was nevertheless astounded. It is remarkable to consider that it was formerly a privately owned assortment. The most captivating tale for me was when the brothers sent a letter to the Bugatti Owners Club, expressing their intention to purchase the whole fleet of cars. This demonstrates significant purchasing power.
ByteStorm
Although I agree that the French autoroute road surfaces are among the most superior in Europe, it is regrettable that three decades ago, Belgian road surfaces were considered to be of low quality compared to UK standards. However, the situation has now reversed.
Paulinelinker
I have just completed an 8-day journey to Strasbourg and other parts of Switzerland, which is in close proximity to your intended destination. Having previously visited the south of France on several occasions, this time we chose to go via Belgium and Luxembourg, resulting in a savings of around £150 on toll fees. Additionally, we considered the road conditions to be satisfactory. The duration of the voyage was extended by around 30 minutes, nevertheless, I deemed it to be worthwhile. Regarding more affordable gasoline, throughout the journey, I traversed France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, and Switzerland, and I perceived that fuel prices were lower in the United Kingdom. I understand that toll roads often have higher pricing, but even when considering all locations, we have not found any cheaper options. ByteStorm
Overall, gasoline prices in most European nations are higher than in the UK. However, of the countries mentioned, Luxembourg stands out as the least costly by a significant margin. In June of this year, the price of Aral 102 in Germany reached as high as €2.20 a litre, whilst Shell V-Power 98 in Luxembourg was priced at €1.79 per litre.
