Engine failure

Recommended Posts

Greetings

I have removed the engine from my 2008 Cooper S due to a need for a new clutch and flywheel. Additionally, the previous owner had run the engine at high temperatures with little oil. Upon inspection, I have found that the cylinder bores are in great shape. My concern is, what course of action would you recommend in this situation? I am replacing the piston rings, conrod bearings, main bearings, chain, oil pump chain, and all gaskets. Is it advisable for me to proceed with replacing the piston rings? Thank you.

If you have progressed to that point, it is advisable to do the following tasks: install the rings, smooth the inner surface of the cylinders, and remove carbon deposits from the cylinder head and pistons. What is the appearance of WRT bearings? If there is any uncertainty, it is advisable to consider making changes.

The only concern with the head is if it has undergone overheating, resulting in warping or cracking.

I have not examined the bearings yet as I was waiting to see what others have done. However, I will now inspect them and proceed to get new stretch bolts. The condition of the head seems OK, but it has not been inspected for warping. It would be advisable to have it professionally pressure tested at a shop to ascertain its integrity. Regarding the break-in process for the piston rings, there are varying opinions among individuals.
Thank you.

He employs a method to refine and establish the rings, operating at a speed of 2500 revolutions per minute, and applying oil intermittently. Upon examining the MOT emission results subsequent to Mike's engine refreshment, it is evident that they are equivalent to those of a brand new engine.

Regarding the cylinder head, it is advisable to have it undergo a pressure test when it is hot, since this is the optimal condition for detecting any potential fractures.

He has extensive knowledge in the subject, which is relevant to my current project of refreshing an engine. I would really appreciate any information or paperwork that outlines the steps involved in doing an engine refresh and the process of properly bedding in the new components. Such resources would be very beneficial to me.

The main issue with N14 engines is that they tend to overheat and experience oil deficiency. While the bottom end may be in good condition, these engines often suffer from camshaft wear, particularly if there are grooves present. It is becoming increasingly difficult to find replacement heads without grooves. Alternatively, one could consider looking into PSA engines THP, which are essentially the same as N14 engines but without any additional components. I will be working on one of these engines next week, specifically from a 207 GTI into a Cooper S, and will be refreshing it. I highly recommend honing the engine and installing better rings. The recommended option for oil rings is the 3 piece oil rings, specifically the FAI PR12-000 standard. Another suitable choice is the SM RS1600 std, which also has 3 piece oil rings and is considered the most optimal solution.

Upon inspection, I have seen that the cams and caps exhibit little scoring, which I consider to be within acceptable limits. If left unaddressed, what potential consequences may arise? Furthermore, the cost of a reliable one is around £430, which exceeds the car's worth. This is not an ideal situation for me. I already own the FIA rings and will get kings bearings. Thank you for your assistance.

If the repair is not done correctly, you will reassemble it and it will produce a pleasant sound. This will bring you great joy as the issue is resolved. Afterwards, you can drive the vehicle or keep it stationary while maintaining a throttle lock at 2500 revolutions per minute until the cooling fans activate intermittently. Subsequently, you can allow the engine to idle, but be aware that the low oil pressure warning light on the dashboard may illuminate due to the release of pressure from the camshaft. If this issue is left unaddressed, it may result in the need for a new turbocharger, as well as the additional tasks of finding a new cylinder head, gasket, and bolts. This process will require a significant amount of time and effort. It is important to approach this situation with a realistic perspective, as these engines tend to have unfavourable outcomes.

I am little concerned about the scoring on the cams. Can you assist me in finding a replacement? Alternatively, provide me with guidance towards the correct path. Although I would want to disregard financial constraints, the presence of a spouse necessitates consideration. Consequently, I am contemplating the potential benefits of cleaning the cams and caps to improve the performance of the product in question, which was functioning adequately. Purchasing items on eBay can be a risky endeavour, since the quality and condition of the products are often unknown until they are received. This uncertainty is causing a significant increase in my stress levels, to the point where it is becoming very concerning. Instead of dismantling it like others, I choose to revive the mini.
Thank you in advance

Currently, I have a car that I previously serviced more than a year ago. During the service, I informed the owner that the engine head was in poor condition and that the oil light was not functioning properly before the service. Unfortunately, the timing chain snapped before the owner recently contacted me, acknowledging that I was correct. They asked for advice on what to do next. My response is that they will need to invest more money to replace the engine head and potentially face a similar outcome if the grooves on the engine head are worn down.

The issue at hand is that I currently have a worn N14 Cooper S engine. To find a suitable replacement, I had to examine five different engines. Now, I have a strategy in place where I ask sellers to remove the first end caps and send me pictures before making a purchase. I recommend checking eBay or contacting Kernow Mini Spares. When reaching out to them, mention that Mini Mike from the forum referred you and specify that you need a N14 engine with good cams.

Subsequently, I suggest use eBay to get a suitable journal. It is worth mentioning that searching for these items may be time-consuming and may result in unsuccessful attempts.

I usually make an effort to search for vehicles equipped with PSA engines, as they often exhibit superior durability and experience less wear over extended periods. This is likely because PSA cars do not handle as well as Mini cars, resulting in Minis being subjected to more intense and prolonged use.

It is advisable to replace the rings and stem seals if you are capable of doing so. As for the bearings, it is up to your discretion, but since the bolts are already removed and the shells are inexpensive, it is recommended to replace them unless they are in perfect condition. Additionally, it is recommended to disassemble the oil pump to check for barrel scoring and measure the cam journals. If the head journals are also scored, it can cause the oil light to come on when the engine is hot. It i
