Motoman
The glass hatch of my 2017 F31 (318 tourer) is now experiencing a malfunction and is unable to close. The door shuts, but fails to secure with a latch. Do you have any suggestions on how to resolve this issue? Thank you very much
IrvesBMW
In order to diagnose the problem, you need ascertain if there is an electrical issue or whether the latch has malfunctioned. To accomplish this, fold the rear seats down so that you can reach the battery while keeping the trunk closed. Deactivate the battery and test whether the tailboard glass can be closed and secured in the absence of electricity in the vehicle.
Motoman
Thank you. I have unplugged the battery but there has been no alteration or effect. The glass hatch is still failing to secure. There are no evident problems with the latching mechanism, however. Do you have any recommendations for the next course of action?
IrvesBMW
Is it possible to engage the lock by applying pressure with a screwdriver?
Motoman
Affirmative. By applying pressure with a screwdriver, the locking mechanism may be seen descending into position. Subsequently, I must elevate it upwards. Here are two images showing it in both orientations.

IrvesBMW
Is manual button pressing required for the release or can it be accomplished with a screwdriver?
Motoman
The button press did not cause it to return; I had to use effort to bring it back.
IrvesBMW
It seems that the latch has really malfunctioned, since our touring vehicle can be easily opened with a screwdriver. Pressing a button causes it to reopen.
Motoman
Thank you for your recommendations. Do you believe the issue might be attributed to the button or is it definitely caused by the latch? The cost of replacing the button is around £80 for the component, while the latch assembly is over £100.
IrvesBMW
By doing a test with the battery unplugged, you have effectively shown that the issue cannot be attributed to an electrical malfunction.
