Who is using what?
I realise my contribution will be minimal, but I am captivated by their sound and wanted to acquire something for mine because of that. 

Does it make more sense to modify the airbox by cutting holes and then install a K&N drop on panel?

A nice, if pricey, one is done by pro ram.

My "susjestion" [] is that you shouldn't squander either of those things. This diesel engine has a very specific range of power. The point isn't really about the intake noise.

At least it's not the 4-cylinder diesel, but I still don't think I could stand to hear more of that "death rattle." 

Did you know that your car comes equipped with an ASD system that can simulate engine noise? If that's the case, installing an intake won't alter the engine's audible nature from within the cabin.

No idea if it has that asd or not; I just haven't noticed it.

Loved my previous E90 330D—tuned, straight through intake, etc. 
The sound of a straight six diesel may be off-putting to some, but I find it enjoyable and it allows me to take pleasure in my daily commute.

In one of Darkside's videos, it was demonstrated that a stock or mapped engine barely noticed a full intake, not even a drop-in filter. They have no effect on the engine's power output until you install large turbos and other components that increase the air intake.

As for background noise, it won't be much either. Diesel induction sounds greatly differ from gasoline induction sounds.
