BEERMAN
Following the replacement of the timing chain and clutch, I am unable to align the engine and gearbox. I have removed the front to provide more space, however they still would not connect. I have rebuilt several gearboxes and engines over the years, but I have never encountered this issue. VWDaveBMW
What kind of alignment tool are you utilising?
BEERMAN
I attempted to use a universal clutch alignment tool, which was incompatible, so I constructed my own, as is my usual practice; the plate alignment seemed OK.
Screwdriver_1
Reinstalling them may be rather challenging; I have found that elevating the jack and positioning the engine at an angle facilitates reassembly without interference from the engine mounts. since it approaches alignment, position yourself underneath and manoeuvre the engine to insert a bolt on each side. Do not tighten these, since they serve just as guides to facilitate the engine's movement for the first engagement of the shaft into the clutch plate. It may be necessary to rotate the crank slightly to contact the splines.
BEERMAN
Thank you; I will attempt it.
badgx
Did you first test the plate on the shaft?
