CheresX
Greetings, I acquired an X218 a few months before, and it has had many troubles, the most recent being exhaust fumes emanating from the back of the engine and into the cockpit. The heat shields are furthermore black. My study suggests that I likely have a leaking exhaust manifold; however, I cannot determine which side it is without removing all the intakes. Could this be anything else? Is this a common issue, and what is the typical cost for the repair? Thank you
Paulinelinker
Clean the area, which may reveal the source of the new discoloration. When you refer to heat shields as being black, are you indicating the vertical silver shields located at the rear of the engine compartment? Is it dry black soil or oily black soil? CheresX
Indeed, the vertical heat shields have a distinctly powdered texture rather than an oily one. Thank you.

Paulinelinker
That is astonishing! If it can be removed, the source should be readily apparent. If the engine is cold and you place your palm near the turbo by the exhaust, you may perceive the airflow. Exercise caution, as it will rapidly get hot. Paulinelinker
Upon reflection, if you examine the rear of the turbo to the left, the brass-colored exit pipe connected to it has a clamp that attaches it to the exhaust; perhaps this is loose? CheresX
I am rather frustrated with myself for not seeing it before to purchase; it has evidently been leaking for an extended period. I will examine it tomorrow; however, there is a flex on both exhaust manifolds that I suspect may be prone to splitting over time. Uncertain whether it is a DIY task suitable for a mechanic with minimal knowledge or if it requires a specialist's intervention. The manifolds are around £250 each from Autodoc; the cost of the actual component is uncertain. Thank you.
