WiseSage
My 2013 520d msport automatic is fully loaded. I was quoted £1800 to replace the timing chain on my 13-year-old vehicle; should I bother with the repair, or sell the car for what it's worth in Scotland? CheresX
What happened to the timing?
WiseSage
Nothing's happened yet It makes a rattling sound between 1 and 1500 rpm while cold, but disappears after the engine is warmed up.
ChatMaven
I think you're between £500 - £800 off.
WiseSage
Between Aberdeen and Dundee, Montrose is a reasonable option.
ChatMaven
For a timing chain, $1,800 is rather a lot to pay. I just got my unit set up and am running a 1 series at the moment. Offering a simple chain change for £650 (not broken, just loud). I understand that larger establishments naturally have higher operating costs, etc., but £1800 seems excessive. WiseSage
That's the cost I've been quoted by several independent garages. I should probably make an appearance at the dealers.
ChatMaven
If I wasn't a thousand miles away in both directions, I'd offer to do it for you.
WiseSage
Depending on your location, I might perhaps load it into a trailer and deliver it to you.😅

drummer
That's a very attractive offer!
ChatMaven
likely less expensive
TDudette
Confident that it's a chain? I have the same problem with a banging injector until it heats up.
WiseSage
Can an injector cause a warning light to activate?
TDudette
A technician informed me it was a malfunctioning ingector, but I'm not an expert on BMWs. Until the engine reaches around 90 to 100 degrees Fahrenheit, mine makes a horrible knocking noise when cold, as if I rev to about 1500 after sitting for 10 minutes. WiseSage
Mine sounds great when revved in neutral when idling. It makes a clunk or a rattling noise between 1 and 1500 rpm when you put it in drive, but after it warms up, everything is good.😃
