Retrofitting the OM602 flywheel and gearbox from dual-mass to single-mass configuration

Recommended Posts

Greetings, world!
I need assistance about a conversion. I own a manual Mercedes-Benz W124 vehicle equipped with a 2.5 turbodiesel OM602 engine.
This vehicle is equipped with a dual-mass flywheel, which is now unavailable for purchase new.

I have started the assembly of components for a 5-speed gearbox refit to the basic mass-flywheel gearbox model 717.411-, which has been adapted for different OM602 and petrol counterparts.

I have purchased a basic mass flywheel with the code: 103 032 1401, which, according to my research, corresponds to an M103 3.0 or 3.2 petrol W124.

My issue pertains to the compatibility of the flywheel and clutch, namely if they are plug-and-play, and the potential danger of injuring the crankshaft owing to the flywheel being sourced from a petrol type.

I appreciate your assistance in advance.

The clutch from the M103 is required to be compatible with that flywheel, and the pilot bearing is necessary to sustain the gearbox input shaft.

If you want to eliminate the dual-mass flywheel to enhance power, use the Valeo SMF modification while retaining your original gearbox.

The Valeo part number 835013 is designated for compatibility with a Sprinter vehicle.

This configuration is shown to accommodate 350 horsepower, hence an OM602 will not pose a problem. However, note that using this kit on your engine necessitates either deepening the center bore of the flywheel by 3mm or reducing the spigot on the engine crankshaft by 3mm. Failure to execute one of those actions will result in improper seating of the flywheel on the crankshaft.

Anticipate a notable rise in vibration at low revolutions and increased rattling from the gearbox when it is a diesel. I performed one on an Alfa 159 2.0 JTDM; the outcome was disastrous. I understand that your options are limited if you cannot get a DMF.
